Hurling History on Shankill Road, Belfast

'This was one of the most special days of my Presidency' - Christy Cooney commenting on a visit to a Primary School on the Shankill Road in Belfast where Protestant and Catholic children play hurling together.

Under a cross-community scheme involving four schools, the game of hurling has been a big hit in the heartland of Unionism.

'The reaction has been all positive', declares Jonathan Manning, Principal of Edenbrooke Primary School. 'And having the GAA President here is a day to be remembered by all of the boys and girls'.

Mr Cooney spoke to the children after a hurling exhibition match played on the Norman Whiteside pitch.
