If anyone doubted that Saturday's BT MacRory Cup quarter-final in Maghery is not a derby fixture, all they need do is check out the Jones family in Eglish. Brothers Ryan and Matthew Jones will field for the opposing schools!
Older sibling Ryan has been a permanent fixture in the St Patrick’s Academy full-back line throughout the league stages of the competition, that included an appearance in the BT MacCormack Cup final. Matthew has also been impressing – in attack for St Patrick’s Armagh, who surprised many by not requiring the play-off route to qualify for the quarter-final draw.
Intriguingly the brothers could well be marking each other. Could that ever have occured in the long history of the competition?
It is another twist to the quarter-final with Tyrone senior team-mates Davy Harte and John Devine assisting Armagh’s preparations, while Ciaran Gourley has been running the Academy line along with his former school mentor Peter Herron. However the main focus though will be on the field of play where Dungannon are favourites to progress.
